Autism Treatment is Costly
Autism is a brain development disorder typically characterized by impaired social interaction and communication, as well as obsessive or repetitive behavior. Causes of autism are not clearly defined and, sadly, there is no known cure. Autism/Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) begins before the age of 3. Some children with ASD show hints of future problems within the first few months of life. Some children with ASD seem to develop normally until around 18 to 24 months of age and then they stop gaining new skills, or they lose skills they once had. Studies have shown that one third to half of parents of children with ASD notice a problem before their child's first birthday, and nearly 80 - 90% saw problems by 24 months of age. Once diagnosed, it is crucial for a child with autism to obtain effective services, treatments, education and intervention. A recent study by Harvard professor Michael Ganz estimates the lifetime costs of caring for a child with autism to be 3.2 million dollars. Consequently, parents and educators struggle with the financial burden of treatment, and in many cases needed resources are not readily available.
